About
The Belize Barrier Reef Watch program was founded in collaboration between ECOMAR and the World Wildlife Fund. In 2008, the Mesoamerican Coral Reef Watch Program was founded as a response to numerous observations of bleaching in Mexico, Belize and Honduras. The initiative was led by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The Belize Coral Watch Program was brought about with the principal goal of launching the Coral Bleaching Early Warning Alert System. In Belize the program was coordinated by ECOMAR, a member organization of the Belize Coral Watch Network.Members have collaborated in monitoring initiatives and continue to meet on a regular basis to discuss present issues and possible actions.
The Belize Coral Watch Program was revitalized in 2022 as the Belize Barrier Reef Watch Program! Over the course of three years, with the expectation that it will render significant data to assist in coral reef preservation. The program seeks to comprehensively engage stakeholders in order to achieve its goals for the benefit of all stakeholders. This will be done through the use of available resources and network liaisons, with the hope that this initiative will prove useful towards overall coral reef conservation goals in Belize.
