Lord Rhaburn Jingle

Was Lord Rhaburn foretelling the future of our reefs when he created the Belize Barrier Reef Watch jingle? Our team wanted a traditional song to feature the Belize Barrier Reef Watch Program that could be used to attract the attention and participation of stakeholders. The traditional music and lyrics of Lord Rhaburn, a calypso, soca, raggae and burkdown musician was the desired style. When ECOMAR first started our discussion with Lord Rhaburn about a jingle for the Belize CoralWatch Program in 2022, the Belize Barrier Reef was not bleaching severely. The chorus of the song he created was “the Belize Barrier Reef is Bleaching”. This was not the message we wanted to get out to stakeholders, we wanted to encourage stakeholders to monitoring the reef and submit reports. We were not thrilled with this chorus, but kept it, and then in 2023, the chorus became true, the Belize Barrier Reef was bleaching, and severely. We lost many old stands of elkhorn coral and others in Belize. 2024 is forecast to be another HOT year, and we expect more corals to succumb.
